Powerlifting Singlets in India — What You Need to Know Before You Compete

Powerlifting singlet in India for competition training, durable weightlifting singlet designed for serious strength athletes.

At a PFI national meet in 2023, a lifter was pulled aside at equipment check. Her singlet was not on the IPF-approved manufacturer list. She had trained for eight months for this meet. She borrowed a singlet from another competitor in a different size and went on to squat a personal best — but the experience shook her.

She is not an exception. Every meet has at least one equipment check incident involving singlets. Most of them are avoidable.

Why the Singlet Rules Are Stricter Than Other Equipment

Belts and knee sleeves have thickness and dimension rules, but you can buy them from any manufacturer as long as the dimensions are correct. A powerlifting singlet is different.

The IPF maintains an approved manufacturer list because the powerlifting singlet is worn during every lift and judges need consistent coverage to assess body position, range of motion, and depth. A singlet that is too loose, has additional padding, or is cut differently from the standard can obscure what judges need to see.

IPF Singlet Specifications — What Your Singlet Must Be

One-piece construction: No separate top and bottom. The singlet must be a single garment.

Coverage: Must cover the torso from at least the armpits to mid-thigh on both front and back.

No hoods: Hooded singlets are not permitted.

No extended sleeves: Sleeves, if present, must not extend beyond the shoulder joint.

No reinforcement: No additional padding, boning, or structural reinforcement inside the garment.

Fit: The singlet must fit the body closely — judges need to see body position clearly.

Approved manufacturer: For IPF World Championship qualification events, singlet must come from a manufacturer on the current IPF approved list. Check ipf.com before purchasing for international competition.

For PFI Domestic Meets

PFI domestic meets at lower tiers often allow singlets that meet the dimensional specifications even if they are not from a brand on the IPF approved list. The rules vary by event level.

The safest approach: contact the meet director or check the specific event rules before purchasing. If in doubt, choose a singlet built to IPF specifications — it will pass at all levels.

Griffin Gears competition singlets are built to IPF specifications on fit, coverage, and construction. For IPF World Championship qualification events, verify current approval status with PFI.

What Happens If Your Singlet Fails Equipment Check

You will be given a short window (usually 15–20 minutes) to find a replacement. At national meets, other lifters and coaches usually have spares. At smaller meets, the options are limited.

The lesson: bring your singlet to training at least once before the meet, confirm it fits correctly, and verify it is appropriate for your event level.

Wear It in Training Before Competing

Wear your competition singlet at least two training sessions before meet day. First, confirm it fits correctly and does not restrict your range of motion on any of the three lifts. Second, confirm there are no construction issues — loose seams, poor elastic, or sizing problems — while you still have time to get a replacement.
